Weddings In Mauritius - Just A Walk Down The Beach

Oct 23rd, 2011 Lawrence White

Mauritius is a famous romantic destination for couples craving for a taste of paradise. Renowned for its breathtaking whites and beaches and blue lagoons, this gem of an island is perfect if you desire to create an unforgettable exotic wedding experience. If you intend to have a wedding in Mauritius you will need to send 2 copies of the following documentation in advance.

Birth certificates

Valid 10-year passports

A Decree of Absolute if one or both parties are divorced

A spouse's death certificate along with the previous marriage certificate, if widowed

Deed Poll, if there has been a change of name

A notarised written consent from parents or guardians if one or both parties are under 18 years of age.

A completed application form for non-residents to marry

The required documents must be sent to the Civil Status Office eight weeks before the wedding date or risk incurring charges. And upon arrival you must present the originals in Port Louis to sign affidavits.

Please take into account that if the bride has been divorced in the last 10 months, she needs to obtain a certificate of non-pregnancy from a Mauritian doctor.

Couples from the UK have the option to have a civil ceremony or a religious wedding service. For a civil ceremony, you need only to be residents for 24 hours. Still, it would be best to arrive at least 3 days before the nuptials to prepare and finalize any last minute plans.

Once done, you may have your wedding at any working day, except public holidays. Aside from the Local Office of the Registrar, the marriage ceremony may be held at a beach or hotel where you are currently staying. You might have to check with the hotel first, to ensure that no other events are scheduled on your chosen date, so you won't have to share with another party.

The ceremony itself is a 30 minute affair, for which you will need two witnesses to be present all throughout. After you obtain your Wedding Certificate, confirm with the Civil Status Office that your Wedding is registered in Mauritius, and accordingly will also be official in the UK.
For a religious wedding service, you are required to be residents for 15 days prior to the wedding.

Also it's mandatory to have a civil wedding before the religious service. This could be done in UK before arriving or in Mauritius. You will need the following documentation:

Wedding Certificate

Confirmation Certificates

Certificate of No Impediment from your Local Register
Office in UK

An authorised letter from your local parish priest or minister in UK validating your request for a wedding in
Mauritius

Please take note that it will not be possible to have a religious wedding service if either you or your partner has been divorced.

Make an appointment with the minister or priest to review wedding arrangements and inspect the church where you plan to have the ceremony. Whether Catholic or Anglican, the religious wedding service may be held any day, except during Lent Season. Furthermore, like the Civil Ceremony, the wedding takes around an hour and requires the presence of at least two witnesses.
